- Smaller
labs are usually an extension of local jewellery
shops. Their purpose is to raise the image of the
store’s inventory. You should know that these
labs are biased and the grading certificates are
hardly reliable or accurate.

What gemological labs can give me an honest assessment
of a diamond’s true quality?
- Gemological
Institute of America (GIA), American Gem Society
(AGS), European Gemological Laboratory* (EGL), American
Gemological Laboratory (AGL), and International
Gemological Institute (IGI). Other labs may be highly
qualified but still do not enjoy the reputation
and popularity as the ones listed.

Are all diamonds priced the same?

No. Every store is different as some have high markups
while some have low to moderate markups. Some stores
must even charge more to break even from other losses.
Some stores have to pay more for their low buying
volume, thus having to charge more. It is usually
a combination of these different situations that
creates a wide range of diamond prices for the same
